Confined space is enclosed or partially enclosed space that is not designed or intended for human occupancy except for the purpose of performing work and has restricted means of access and egress, and may become hazardous to personnel entering it due to:

  • The materials or substances in it OR
  • Any other conditions relating to it.

Some examples of confined spaces are:

  • Construction (risers, service, duct, lift, ventilation & exhaust shaft, void spaces, trenches, tunnels, pits, wells & sewers).
  • Industrial (all above as well as boilers, trunks, cofferdams, pipelines, cargo tanks, fuel tanks, ballast tanks, storage tanks, process vessels, silos, vats etc).
  • Marine (shipboard spaces entered through small hatchways or access points, cargo tanks, cellular double bottom tanks, duct keels, ballast or oil tanks and void spaces).
